Human Growth & Development

From the Ground Up – Basics of Human Growth & Development, plus a look at some theories – Set 1/3 Hours

Participants will get an introduction to and engage in discussion of major principles and theories on growth, development and education through the play of children. We will look at developmental charts and have an overview of major notable theorists in the area of child development.

Supporting Children’s Social & Emotional Development, The Foundation” – Birth to Age 5 – Set 1/2.5 hours

(Part 1 of a 4 part series)- Basic techniques for recording and interpreting factual, objective observations. A comprehensive overview of different types of observation techniques for recording and documenting challenging behaviors and developing action plans. Presents the basic principles of communicating with families about behavioral concerns and developing individualized plans of action.

Evaluating “Illuminting Care” – Set 3/6 hours

An In-Depth Study into the Pedagogy and Practice of Care in Early Childhood Communities

(6 part series) – Participants will analyze and critically examine the book “Illuminating Care” by Carol Garboden Murray in a 6-week journey of researching the pedagogy presented in the book and comparing those ideas with the experiences held by members of the group.

“Play, A Gray Area: A Critical Examination of Peter Gray’s Theories of PLAY”-Set 3/6-10 hours

Participants will critically examine and compare 10 Letters from theorist Peter Gray’s ongoing Substack series entries, with other theorist’s ideas on learning through play. During 3 group meetings, participants will choose a specific letter to compare and contrast with 2 other credible resources, noting similarities and differences.

Health, Safety & Nutrition

Supporting Healthy Choices and Activities in Child Care – Set 2/3 hours

Investigate health, safety and nutrition aspects of running an ECE program. Discuss ideas for incorporating the USDA food program, wellness guidelines for children entering care, health department guidelines for cleaning and sanitation, and current FCC Health & Safety Review Checklist into your program. Share ideas with your families to encourage healthy living strategies.

Keepin’ it Clean, Developing Eco-Friendly Habitats and Practices – Set 2/3 hours Participants will examine routines, materials, tools and practices for children, families, and/or professionals

Participants will explore a variety of business practices and tools to be more professional and supportive of positive family relationships.

“Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe” Staffing, Interviews & Recruiting – Set 2/3 hours

Participants will explore recruiting strategies, and examine relevant
laws/guidelines and professional ethics around staffing. Develop policies and procedures for staff recruitment for their ECE programs.

“I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss”-Handbooks, Evaluations, Meetings, Oh My…“- Set 2/3 hours

Participants will explore program management processes/systems that focus on
staff handbooks, job descriptions, holding staff meetings, evaluations, and appreciation.

“I Got a Feeling We’re Not in Kansas Anymore: Do You Have the Heart, Brains & Courage to Lead? – Set 2/3 hours

Participants will examine Bureau of Labor and Industry (BOLI) laws relevant to childcare personnel, examine principles of supervision of staff, explore strategies for team-building, morale-building, and respecting diversity and individual differences.

“Incorporating Diversity into Your ECE Program”– Set 2/3 hours

We will examine our personal cultures and values and the impact that it has on creating our individual programs. Exploration of strategies to support families with emphasis on respecting diverse cultures and honoring individual family strengths. Exploration of the impact of culture values, attitudes, beliefs and/or biases on interactions. Participants will explore the effects of their own personal values/attitudes/beliefs/biases on all aspects of their program.

“The Equity Equation” – Set 2/4 hours, 2 – 2 hour sessions, or 1/4 hour session

In this course we will investigate the NAEYC position statement on Advancing Equity in early childhood programs. Discuss and understand the terms surrounding equity and all that it encompasses. Explore strategies that create an equitable, caring environment for the children in our care. 2 hours Diversity & 2 hours Understanding & Guiding Behaviors

“Play Based Learning: Building the curriculum into the environment” – Set 2/3 hours Participants will explore strategies for creating environments that are play based and educational. Examining the theory that if children are engaged in their play, they are learning. Exploring approaches, strategies, and tools to promote development and learning.

Participants will explore strategies and effective approaches to integrating mathematics into their own ECE programs. We will examine the NAEYC position statement on Early Childhood mathematics and develop creative play based strategies/tools that work for children.

More Than A Book – Ways to Stretch Children’s Stories, Creating Fun Opportunities For Promoting Language – Set 2/2 hours

Participants will explore play based strategies of creating story stretchers for children’s literature. Thus promoting development, imagination and language skills.

The Lore of the Wild: Exposing Children to Wild Learning – Set 2/2 hours

We will explore approaches to learning about nature and outdoor education. Examining ideas and activities to promote inquiry and connections with nature at every level, from sensory stations to back yards to entire forests.

Special Needs

Examining Special Needs & the Laws that Govern Them – Set 2 / 3 hours

Participants will examiner the distinctions, similarities and differences among the types of special needs. They will explore the categories of disability in Federal Special Education Law. Examination of the distinctions, similarities and differences among the types of special needs.

Exploring Differing Abilities via Children’s Literature – Set 2 / 2 hours

Participants will discuss and explore children’s literature using a filter of inclusivity focusing on equity in regards to disabilities. We will also practice using the Children’s literature evaluation tool from the lesson

Making Sense of the Senses: Examining 8 Senses and Strategies to Help Children Navigate Their World – Set 2 / 2 hours

Participants will examine 8 human senses, how they work together and develop strategies to help children with sensory processing amd heavy work. As well as, the value of working together with therapists and families.

Understanding and Guiding Children’s Behaviors

Exploration of Developmentally Appropriate Practices & Theories of Guiding Behaviors – Set 2 / 3 hours – Participants will examine NAEYC’s statement on DAP and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. We will explore a variety of behavior guidance systems in order to develop strategies for guiding children’s behaviors with intention. Participants will examine & develop conscious behavior guidance strategies.

Exploring Strengthening Families through the Protective Factors – Set 2 / 6 hours – Strengthening Families is an international initiative aimed to develop and enhance five specific characteristics that help keep families safe from abuse and neglect. It focuses on the positive/strengths that a family already has, adding to that foundation through the understanding of our valued and skills, giving respect to all cultures and family strengths.

Personal, Professional & Leadership Development

How do I get from Point A to Point B: How to devise a road map for my ECE journey – Set 2 / 3 hours

Participants will explore factors in developing and applying professional goals and strategies into their ECE careers that encompass ORO, QRIS, professionalism, ethics and standards. Examination and application of professional and/or leadership development supports and strategies.

The Advocacy Toolbox: Equip, Engage, Empower -Set 2/3 hours

Together we will explore why, as an early childhood professional, you are uniquely positioned to speak up about the critical importance of high-quality early learning experiences, equitable access to resources, and fair compensation for educators. We will examine concrete tools that will help you get involved in effective advocacy.

Families & Community Systems

Playing Isn’t Just for Kids: Creating events that honor, connect and celebrate families & communities withing our ECE programs – Set 2 / 2 hour

We will be exploring strategies and tools to include all families in our ECE programs in order to make connections with other families, creating a stronger community of parents and resources as well as honoring family cultures and connections to needed resources. We will be exploring techniques to share with families how to support their children through play.

Building Connections with Families: A care providers role in helping families handle stress – Set 2 / 3 hours

Together we will examine family needs and stresses, exploring strategies to support families in stress. How to create and build positive relationships and communication pathways. Begin developing a resource guide to assist parents with strategies in times of need. We will create a local resource guide to share with families. Application of techniques to develop positive partnerships with families and/or community systems.

Observation & Assessment

Participants will examine the early learning domains, observation and assessment tools and ways to utilize gained information in curriculum and environment planning.

Making Your Observations An Effective, Inclusive and Integral Part of Your Classroom and How to break down what we observe and inject skill building opportunities into play

Set 2/2 hours

We will explore the links between authentic observation and assessments and ways to individualize curriculum, develop proactive programs and design play based strategies to strengthen skills.
